Student bags Award

Miss Adebayo Adeola, a student of Department of Electrical/Electronics, College of Engineering, Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, was on Thursday, October 27, 2011, honoured with a Scholarship Award. The Award for the Best Female Engineering Student was under the aegis of Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), Ekiti State Chapter.

Present at the occasion, Award Luncheon, were: the wife of the Executive Governor, Ekiti State, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, represented by Dr. (Mrs) Afolabi; Chairperson, APWEN (Ekiti State Chapter), Engr. M.A. Kumapayi; Hon. Commissioner of Works, Mr Sola Adebayo; Hon. Commissioner of Women Affairs, Mrs Fola Adewusi; Special Adviser to the Governor, Mr. Kayode Jegede; Prof. (Mrs) E.Y. Aderibigbe, Department of Microbiology, Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti; Vice Chancellor Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, Prof. Sidi Osho; a host of others.

Delivering the lecture of the occasion, the Guest Speaker, Prof. (Mrs) E.Y. Aderibigbe, who spoke on the Role of Women in Nation Building, said women play key roles in nation building as housewife, mother and professional. Speaking on the professional weight of women in nation building, Prof. Aderibigbe said “women are pursuing careers in virtually all disciplines. There are women Engineers, Lawyers, Pilots, Soldiers etc. However, there are some professions that are not contributing positively to building a nation. The unhealthy professions such as commercial sex workers, robbery, internet crimes, fraudsters, talebearers, gossips, sugar mummy and slanderers destroy a nation.” Prof. Aderibigbe therefore charged all women to imbibe truthfulness, diligence and excellence, as these virtues help in nation building.

After the lecture came the presentation of awards. Six students were honoured with awards by APWEN. They are Miss Adebayo Adeola, Electrical/Electronic Engineering Student, College of Engineering, Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti; with CGPA 4.85; Miss Aboloye Christiana Omotola, Civil Engineering Student, Faculty of Engineering, Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti; with CGPA 4.05; Miss Yemisi Mary Emmanuel, Mineral Resources Engineering Student, Federal Polytechnic Ado Ekiti; with CGPA 3.23. Other three awards, Best Female Science Girls, were given at Secondary School level.

Miss Adebayo Adeola who responded on behalf of the tertiary students said “the award is an encouragement to every female child in Nigeria. With this award, we will keep the flag of success flying”.

While giving her remarks, the Vice Chancellor, ABUAD, Prof. Sidi Osho, said” We appreciate APWEN for the honour bestowed on our students. The education of the female child is very important in our society. I want to encourage APWEN to initiate a student body in all our institutions. The word excellence is very important. It is key and significant”.
